Founded in 1961, English Sinfonia is one of the oldest chamber orchestras in the UK. For many years the orchestra was closely associated with Sir Charles Groves, a relationship which produced many fine recordings, including a complete cycle of Schubert Symphonies which won a ‘Recording of the Year’ award. ![]() Janice Graham has been the leader of ES for the past decade and recently accepted the position of Artistic Director, a move that augurs well for the future: “…with a musician like Graham at its helm, it’s no wonder the English Sinfonia has earned such a prominent place on the international music scene…” The Strad Today’s Orchestra has a core team of some 30 players, each at the height of their career. They share a passion to strive for perfection and to explore exciting and innovative ideas. As individuals they perform music of many genres - from pop and film soundtracks to operas, shows and classical - both as group members and as soloists. Their experience spans the breadth of the world of music. Old into New English Sinfonia believes that music should have no boundaries. All that is required of its repertoire is that this should please, excite, inspire, amaze and sometimes challenge listeners and performers alike. In an era when many works are considered too long to be broadcast in their entirety, ES is working with contemporary composers to present appealing shorter pieces alongside the established repertoire. |
